How To Start A Podcast

Starting a podcast isn’t difficult, but there are a number of steps you’ll need to go through in order to get started.

Take the following steps:

  • Choosing a topic
  • Choose a name
  • Cover art creation
  • Intro & outro music
  • Buying equipment
  • Audio recording & editing
  • Submit to Apple Podcasts (iTunes)
  • Promotion

Choose A Topic

Make sure that you choose a narrow topic. A topic that has a specific audience.

Choose A Name

Choose a name that has room for expansion, in case you decide to expand later on. Think big. Then purchase a domain name for your podcast.

Create Cover Art

Design a cover for your podcast. But if you have money, get a person to design a cover. For example, on 99 Designs.

Make sure it is properly designed because

It gives people the first impression.

Choose An Intro Music

You can use a royalty-free song. Create your own unique intro people will associate with your podcast.

Get A Microphone

Get a microphone of high quality. Because audio quality is important.

Recording And Editing

Get software for your recording and editing. Common ones are:

  • Alitu
  • GarageBand (Free option)

The best software I recommend is

Alitu.

Alitu is a podcast creation tool that builds your episodes. It’s all browser-based software that works on any computer connected to the internet.

This is what the software does:

  • Cleans up your audio
  • Allows you to add music
  • Helps you put together piece of music
  • Published your episodes.

Just upload your recordings, and Alitu will do everything for you.

Alitu is a great tool. Take advantage of its 7-day free trial to sign up and try it out.

Get A Podcast Host

I use and highly recommend Buzzsprout. It’s the best podcasting platform.

Upload Your First Episode

It’s important that you launch your podcast with more than 1 episode so that people don’t have to wait to hear more.

To upload an episode, simply follow the given instructions carefully. I feel 2 to 4 episodes is a good number to start with.

Submit To Apple Podcasts (iTunes)

Submit your RSS feed to other podcast directories too.

What Is Needed To Start A Podcast

  • A Good Idea

Ask yourself why your podcast matters and is different, aside from the fact that it’s yours. Will guests learn something they can’t learn anywhere else?

  • Computer

You can use an old computer as long as the CPU is up to date.

  • Audio Software

Make sure you have a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). This is the music production software that you will record your podcast audio into.

Having the right DAW will also help you to edit or process your audio such as boosting levels, adding compression, or removing part of your podcast.

Some free and inexpensive options available are:

  • GarageBand
  • Reaper
  • Presonus Studio One
  • Waveform Free

Podcast Microphones

Single Microphone Setups

This is ideal if you are alone.

Some popular single microphone options available are:

Stands range from a tripod, tabletop, boom arm to the shock mount. You will choose one depending on your needs and financial muscle.

  • Headphone Extensions

You may need a headphone extension cable to be long enough to hear yourself wherever you’re speaking from.

  • Spacious Room

You will have to find a room that has enough space to accommodate your equipment. If possible, find a room that is soundproof.

Podcast Hosting Platforms

There are lots of platform options available for hosting your podcast. Some are free, and others are paid platforms.

Before you buy podcast hosting for your podcast, look at the features carefully. Choose a podcast platform that will help you realize your dream of starting a podcast. So choose your podcast platform carefully.
