PicMonkey helps social media marketers, small business entrepreneurs, and anyone who needs to communicate visually stands out in a sea of sameness with impactful visuals that tell their brand story.

Picmonkey Or Canva – Differences

PicMonkey is mostly used for photo editing. Therefore, it covers all basic photo edits, filters, and overlays. It also offers advanced features for enhancing photos of people.

While Canva is aimed more at producing graphics that are suitable for a range of digital and print applications such as images for social media and blogs, infographics, special document layouts, letterheads, business cards, posters, and others.

Picmonkey Or Canva – Similarities

In both systems, there is a feature you can use to upload your own images, layer things, and alter their transparency to create interesting and stunning textures and effects.

Both allow you to do basic edits to photos, adjusting qualities such as brightness, contrast, saturation, and more, and both of them offer a wide range of pre-set filters.

Each platform has its own strengths and weaknesses. So, have you ever considered using them in tandem?

PicMonkey will do certain things that Canva cannot do and vice versa. Their capabilities are quite complementary. So if you want cheap or free image editing solutions, I have prepared a summary of the best points of each and some of their weaknesses.

I’ll also mention the pricing of each system and its functionalities to help you make an informed decision.

Pros of Canva

Here are its pros:

  • Has a wide range of pre-sized canvases for almost any application ranging from social media posts, e-books, desktop wallpapers, business stationery to finding your way around and getting what you want.
  • Great series of tutorials on design, and a blog on various aspects of graphic design.
  • Offers nice pre-made free graphic templates, so all you need to do is alter the text and colours to suit your needs.
  • A good range of preset filters, with a dialogue box that shows you what changes the filter has made to the image.
  • Free account which will always keep the graphics you’ve already made which will remain editable and your own images that you’ve uploaded.
  •  Auto-saves your work as you go. Download it whenever you want

Its Cons

Here are its cons:

  • Can’t stretch many elements; photos can be resized by holding down the shift key and dragging, and lines can be extended but the rest of the elements you can only resize them in their correct proportions.
  • You can’t upload your own fonts in the free version only in the paid version.
  • Can’t make an image with a transparent background.
  • Impossible to change the image size once you start but you can in Canva for Work.
  • Making a text mask where you have an image showing through text is slow.

Pros of PicMonkey

  • Make overlays with transparent backgrounds for your brand which you can use for your images wherever you need them.
  • Create a simple logo in PicMonkey which you can overlay onto any graphic you choose.
  •  Use your own fonts from your computer.
  • Stretching anything to fit is easy. Simply hold down the shift key while dragging a corner of the image or overlay.
  • A wide range of filters and effects, so you can really make your images distinctive.
  • A good series of tutorials, written for non-designers.

Its Cons

  • Can’t save any of your designs into their system, and you can’t save editable images to finish later – when you save, the layers are automatically flattened before it’s downloaded to your computer.
  • Can now save editable files in their Hub, which is an add-on to PicMonkey Royale, the paid version.
  • Hard to centre anything such as text or shapes.

Use it for:

Creating logos

Use PicMonkey to create any sort of logo or other brand elements that you intend to use as an overlay in your graphics because it allows you to create a shape with a transparent background.

Take note that when you’re saving your shape with its transparent background, it needs to be saved as a .png file. Because if you try to save it as a .jpg, it will automatically convert your transparent background to solid white. So it becomes useless as an overlay.

Image editing

Edit your image with PicMonkey. Canva will only add filters or change simple aspects such as brightness, contrast, tint, and blur to an entire image as there’s no “Draw” tool to add to your own bits.

PicMonkey has a “Draw” tool in Effects; you can change the size and color of the tool, and you can alter things as small as 1 pixel. It also has an eraser so you can erase parts of one layer or effect so that the original image shows through.

Clever use of the eraser and the pencil together can create elements that look like they are wrapped around each other.

Always use Canva for this! For two reasons:

1. Keeps your files editable. So all you need to do is make a copy of your original template. To do this, click on the little arrow in the top right of the image you want, and make a copy.

2. Perfect for changing text and other elements.

If you want to resize things or start with a flexible size because you’re not really sure what you want to end up with (like when you’re creating a logo) use PicMonkey always.

Let’s look at the pricing overview of both Pickmonkey and Canva.

PicMonkey Pricing

Here’s the pricing:

  • Basic: $7.99 per month, paid monthly or $71.88 paid annually which is $5.99 per month.
  • Pro: $12.99 per month, paid monthly or $119.88 paid annually which is $9.99 per month.

The main difference in pricing comes from their Hub service.

With the basic plan, you get limited storage in the Hub, but with the Pro plan, you get unlimited Hub storage.

Canva Pricing

Here’s the pricing:

Free Forever: $0 per month.

Canva for Work: $12.95 per month.

Paid monthly or $119.40 paid annually which is $9.95 per month.

With Canva, a paid subscription gets you access to tons of features like magic resize, uploading custom fonts, organizing your photos with multiple folders, and other things.

Free Plan Vs. No Free Plan

One of the interesting things about Canva is that it has a Free Plan Forever which most bloggers use. With this, you can host some of your images on the Canva platform when you need them to create social media graphics.

It also allows you access to tons of templates that help you create pictures quickly. It’s a great plan with a lot of features and free graphics and some photos.

While PicMonkey doesn’t really have a free plan. Now you can create images using all the features, but if you ever want to save your creations so you can put them elsewhere, you need to pay for an actual subscription.

Free Trials

PicMonkey offers a 7-day free trial of its Basic service while Canva provides a 30-day free trial of its Canva For Work service.

Photo Editing

When they compete, PicMonkey vs. Canva, PicMonkey is the winner of photo editing. Because Canva isn’t truly a photo editor at all, it’s graphic design software.

If you approach Canva thinking you will be able to edit photographs intensely, you’d be mistaken, and likely you will feel cheated.

Layered Vs. Drag and Drop Design

Concerning designing between PicMonkey vs. Canva, PicMonkey has a more layered approach because Canva is strictly a drag and drop platform.

Difference between a PicMonkey collage and a Canva Collage

With PicMonkey, you get access to these different types of colleges such as ducks in a row which is a collage of pictures in a rectangular row, a square deals which are equal-sized squares inside of a square-shaped collage.

With Canva, you will have access to grids, which allows you to create many different combinations of images based on the size of your canvas.

Starting from scratch when it comes to graphic design is never fun. There is so much inspiration out there, but even recreating that inspiration can be draining.

What if you could see something that inspires you, and recreate it instantly in an image? Well, that’s where templates come in!

With PicMonkey and Canva, you have access to tons of templates that will help you create images quickly and easily. From square social media templates to Pinterest images, both of these websites have you covered when it comes to templates.

With PicMonkey, you can access a template gallery filled with inspiration. You can filter these out to find what you are looking for based on things like category, print size, and popular tags.

Once you see an image you might like, you can preview it for further details, and then customize it further.

With Canva, you start with the image size first. Once you have a blank template to work from, you can then see what templates they have available for that canvas size.

You can quickly erase a template and pick another one if you decide that the template isn’t for you. Canva’s way of selecting a template may work better for some people.

Next, let’s talk about something that Canva only offers.

With a free Canva subscription, you can take advantage of some of these features, but you need a Canva for Work subscription to really enjoy the branding features Canva has to offer.

With a Canva For Work subscription, you can add company logos, brand colors, upload fonts, and choose your official brand fonts.

These branding kits are extremely helpful when you go to update your images because your branding will be at the forefront of what is shown to you.

No more remembering brand color codes by heart, you can just input them into Canva, and quickly pick color codes when you create branded images.

Since Canva puts such an emphasis on branding, you can rest easy knowing that you will always have your brand colors and fonts at your fingertips.

If you add people to your Canva for Work team, it becomes easy to share your branding with them as well.

Image Storage

How do these two tools stack up when it comes to image storage? Well, it depends on what you need from image storage.

PicMonkey offers Hub, which is a tool you can use to store images you have been working on.

Then you can pick up where you left off if you decide to use the PicMonkey mobile app on your phone or tablet.

It essentially allows you to work across devices on pictures that you are editing or graphics you are creating.

Canva has a ton of organizational capacity for you to store images access assets in folders on your computer.

You can’t access those exact folders on the Canva mobile application, though, which is unfortunate.

You can, however, obtain any pictures currently inside of a graphic design you are working on (as long as you don’t remove that picture.)

You can also access all of the graphic design pictures you are working on across devices.

Both of them offer a lot when it comes to image storage.

It depends on what you are using the tools for as to whether you think they provide appropriate storage or not.

Support & Knowledge Database

When it comes to supporting, you won’t be kept hanging. Both of these websites have substantial knowledge databases with a ton of tutorials to help you use these tools.

When it comes to supporting from a human, you will find that both of these websites don’t have phone support.

Not having phone support is common among online tools because if they offered phone support, it would come at a cost that many users don’t want to pay.

Instead, you can send in a ticket or email for assistance. Both of them want to make sure that you get your questions answered as quickly as possible.

You should always make sure that you use the proper email address when emailing these companies for support.

You want to make sure that they can associate your question with an actual email address on file.

While email support is not the best when other types of help like chat or phone support are solved quicker, email support keeps costs low.

It’s also beneficial for tools like this because you can usually easily add screenshots and extra helpful items so the customer service representative can help you more effectively.

Well, you are in luck! Both of these tools have fantastic phone applications that work on phones and tablets.

You can use these while you are away from your computer to create beautiful images, all with your smart device.

Both have created applications that are available on the iTunes store and the Google Play Store.

With PicMonkey, you can use Hub to access images that you were working with on your computer, on your phone, or tablet.

With Canva, you have access to all the designs you were working with on your computer, right from your phone.

However, you don’t have access to the uploaded pictures you had on your account when you go over to your phone.

You do, however, have access to Canvas images and your phone or tablet’s camera roll, so you should have many images to choose from.

Overall, both of these mobile applications are excellent representations of their computer counterparts.

You can’t go wrong with using any of the mobile apps that go along with these websites.

Summary: PicMonkey Or Canva, which is better?

You can’t truly compare the two tools. Many bloggers consistently pay for both platforms because there are some unique differences.

PicMonkey has some layering and graphic design capabilities, but they shine when it comes to image editing. You can edit all the stock and in-house photos you may have without learning a more advanced platform like Adobe Photoshop.

Their graphic design templates are interesting, but they may not work for all bloggers. Canva, on the other hand, really leans into the fact that they are a graphic design tool, not a photo editor. They give you a few tools to fix images, but they never claim to be a photo editing tool.

Instead, they want to empower you with graphic design tools so that you can create beautiful blogs and social media graphics. While you could get all your needs met with PicMonkey, in a sense, there are many reasons why you may want to invest in Canva as well.

With tools such as a brand kit and tons of free images available, they may be a better graphic design tool than PicMonkey. It depends on your needs as a blogger.

You may find that you want to invest in one, both, or none of these tools. When it comes to PicMonkey vs. Canva, you truly can’t compare the two equally. Luckily, they both allow you to have some type of free trial, so you can test the platforms and see which one works best for you!
