Google Search Console is a web service by Google that allows webmasters to check indexing status and optimize visibility of their websites to bring more relevant traffic to their websites.

Until 20 May 2015, the service was called Google Webmaster Tools. In January 2018, Google introduced a new version of the search console, with changes to the user interface.

Ideally, get set up on Google Analytics first, then adding Google Search Console is very easy.

Step 1: Go To Google Search Console

Visit Google Search Console.

Step 2: Log In First

For those with Google Analytics accounts, log in using the same details you use to access your Analytics account. Or log in with a Google account. But if you don’t have a Google account, you will have to create one before you continue.

Step 3: Add A Property

When you successfully log in, click the “Add A Property” button at the top of the page.

Step 4: Enter A URL

Enter the URL of your website and click continue.

Step 5: Verify Site

Next you’ll be required to verify that you own the website. You will be given four options.

Choose One Option To Verify Your Account:

  1. Upload an HTML file if you have access to the root of your domain.
  2. Through your hosting provider.
  3. Verify via Google Tags for those who use it.
  4. Verify ownership via your Google Analytics Tracking ID. This is the easiest and quickest method.

What To Do Immediately After You Set Up Google Search Console

If you have not yet installed Yoast SEO plugin, then install it. The Yoast SEO plugin will automatically generate XML sitemaps for your site content.

Submit the xml sitemap. This enables Google to find content on your site and index it faster.

However, there are many tools online that can create a sitemap for you, which you then need to upload to the root of your website.

Once your sitemap is live and created on your website, then you go to the sitemaps section of the Google Search Console and click “Add your sitemap”.

How Do I Access The Google Search Console

Take the following steps:

Step 1- Login

Sign in to your Google Search Console account.

Step 2 – Manage Site

Once logged in, you will see a list of the websites within your account on the upper left-hand side.

Once you’ve selected your website, scroll to the bottom and click on Settings.

Step 3 – Add User

After you click the “Settings” link, the screen below will appear. It will list all the users that have access to the data within this account.

While on this page, click the area that says ”Users and Permissions.” It will take you to a page that shows all the users who have access to your account.

In the upper right-hand corner, you will see a blue “Add Users” link.

Step 4 – Conclude The Process

When you click the “Add User” link, a popup will appear where you will add the user’s email to who you want to give access to.

Just like in Google Analytics, add their Gmail email, select which access type you would like to give them and then click “add.”

When successfully added, their email address will show in the list of users who have access to that website’s Google Search Console Account.

That’s it! You have set up Google search console successfully.
